Harishankar waterfall is located in Balangir district of Odisha state and on the border of Odisha and Chhattisgarh states. It is surrounded by Gandhamardan mountain with lush green dense forest. The natural scenic beauty and flowing breeze of fall will leave you stunned.

The waterfall falls into many stages which makes it awesome. Tourists take bathing in the different stages. It has very peaceful environment and it is not just a waterfall but also an important pilgrimage place in Odisha (Harishankar).

History

it is believed that when Lord Laxman got injured in Ramayana war and Lord Hanuman went to Himalaya for Sanjeevani herbs, a piece of mountain had fallen on this place while Lord Hanuman swaying in the air through this path to Sri lanka. Thats why this is know as Gandhamardan mountain.

Vaishkah Mela (fair) at harishankar

There is a fair which happens in the month of Vaishakh. Vaishakh is the second month of Hindu calendar. The fair happens for seven days from Ashtami to Purnima in Vaishkah month. Devotees take water from harishankar temple and cross the seven mountains to reach Bhagwan Narsingh temple on other side of mountain.

Vaishkah month normally falls between April and May.

How to Reach Harishankar Temple

By Air:

• Jharsuguda (Odisha) and Raipur (CG) both are nearest airport to Harishankar waterfall or Harishankar temple, which is 200 km away.
• From the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach the temple. The journey by road may take around 5 -6 hours.

By Train:

Harishankar road is the nearest railway station to Harishankar temple and it is just 30 km away. You can hire a taxi from the station.

Best time to Visit Harishankar Temple

• Balangir, the district headquarters, has plenty of hotels. Consider staying in Balangir city, and then plan a visit to Harishankar Temple. The temple is 78 km away from Balangir.
• Patnagarh is the second option, but it’s a taluka place, and only small lodges are available. It is 40 km away from Harishankar temple, on the way from Balangir to the temple.
